On August 1, the Toronto Caribbean Carnival Grand Parade turned the city into a showcase of Caribbean costume design. Masqueraders brought colour, movement and craftsmanship to the route from Exhibition Place.
Our fashion editor Micheala brought her own vision to frontline mas in “Daughter of Xaymaca” with Freedom Mas Band. Her costume paired shorts with a design that covered her chest and midriff, reflecting her personal sense of modesty while preserving the colour, beauty and spectacle of Carnival. It was a striking reminder that playing mas leaves room for each person’s own style.
These photographs document design in motion at Toronto Caribbean Carnival 2026. They invite a closer look at the costumes’ shapes, textures and details, as well as the individuality each masquerader brings to the road.
